Why the code matters

One 8-digit code drives six outcomes

Classification isn't paperwork — it's the single decision your entire import or export economics hangs on. Get it wrong in either direction and it costs money: overpay silently, quarter after quarter, or underpay and answer for it later, with interest, up to five years on.

01

Import duty stack

BCD, Social Welfare Surcharge, AIDC and Health Cess — every rate keys off the 8-digit line. The wrong line means the wrong landed cost.

02

GST rate & invoice HSN

The HSN you print on every invoice, and the GST slab you charge, both flow from the same classification.

03

Licences & clearances

BIS, FSSAI, CDSCO, WPC, Legal Metrology, EPR — whether a clearance is triggered at all depends on where the product sits in the tariff.

04

Export incentives

RoDTEP, RoSCTL and drawback are all published against tariff lines. Mis-classify and you leave incentive money on the table.

05

FTA eligibility

Preferential rates under ASEAN, UAE CEPA, UK CETA and more are granted per tariff line — subject to rules of origin and CAROTAR 2020.

06

Penalty exposure

Under-declaration is recoverable for up to five years, with interest and penalty. The classification is the first thing an auditor checks.

Why now — 2025-26

Classification is now a monitoring problem, not a one-time opinion

India's tariff and exemption architecture has been rebuilt in the space of a year, and more is scheduled. A rate confirmed last quarter can be wrong this quarter. An opinion filed and forgotten is a liability waiting to surface.

That's why we don't sell a one-off PDF. We classify, then we watch — matching every change to your catalogue and re-doing the arithmetic before it hits your bill of entry.

Nov 2025
Exemption architecture rebuilt. Notification 45/2025-Customs consolidated 50/2017-Cus and 30+ others into a single master exemption regime.
1 May 2026
Budget 2026 tariffisation. New tariff lines took effect and ~54 headings' effective rates were written into the Schedule — some 8-digit lines changed.
15 Jul 2026
UK CETA in force. A new preferential lane opened for UK-origin goods — subject to rules of origin.
Signed, awaiting ratification
India–EU FTA. Signed 27 Jan 2026; sourcing economics will shift again on entry into force.
Since 22 Sep 2025
GST 2.0 slabs. New 0 / 5 / 18 / 40% structure changed the IGST leg on many lines.
1 Jan 2028
HS 2028 arrives. The eighth edition brings 299 amendment sets — every register will need re-correlation.

Classify a product right now

One product, one instant read: ITC-HS 8-digit code, the indicative duty stack, GST, possible FTA routes and the compliance flags it triggers — with the GRI reasoning shown. Indicative only, not expert-signed. It's the free version of what we do at catalogue scale.

The full service

What expert-signed classification actually delivers

The free tool gives you one indicative read. The enterprise service turns it into a defensible, monitored, money-saving classification programme across your whole catalogue.

Five blocks of output — on every SKU

BLOCK 1

Inputs & extraction

Every input captured, key attributes extracted, and the missing duty-determinative facts flagged — so nothing is classified on a guess.

BLOCK 2

Classification with GRI reasoning

ITC-HS 8-digit, candidates considered, the GRI path walked in order, and a plain-English rationale citing the governing notes.

BLOCK 3

Import duty stack

BCD, SWS, AIDC, Health Cess and IGST, with the total effective duty computed exactly — and ₹/unit where price is known.

BLOCK 4

Opportunity & compliance

FTA routes by origin with their rule-of-origin conditions, and the licences and clearances the product triggers.

BLOCK 5

Risk & action

A risk rating and a specific recommended action — from "accept & file" to "file a CAAR advance ruling" — with the exact information needed for any grey area.

Three value engines

💰

Duty savings & FTA arbitrage

We quantify preferential-rate opportunities across your origins — always with the rule-of-origin and CAROTAR 2020 documentation cost stated, so the saving is bankable, not a headline number.

🛡️

Compliance shield

Every licence, QCO and clearance the classification triggers, surfaced early — so a BIS or WPC requirement never ambushes a shipment at the port.

📡

Always-on monitoring

Notifications, Budget changes, GST moves and FTA events matched to your SKUs, the duty recomputed, and an alert issued within a 48-hour SLA from publication.

Reliability & governance

GRI-sequenced reasoningEvery code walks GRI 1→6 in order against Section and Chapter Notes — never a lookup.
Version-stamped snapshotsEach output carries the knowledge-base snapshot ID it was produced against, so it stays defensible months later.
Tiered human reviewHigh-value, high-delta and contested lines escalate to review before they're relied on.
Expert sign-offFinal classifications are signed by a licensed customs specialist — the free tool never is.

How we engage

Questions

HS classification, answered

The free tool gives you an instant, AI-generated indicative classification and duty view for a single product — no sign-up, no charge. The enterprise service adds expert sign-off by a licensed customs specialist, rates verified against the live tariff and notifications on your transaction date, quantified FTA savings, licensing execution, and 48-hour change monitoring across your whole catalogue.

It walks the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI 1→6) in order and classifies to an ITC-HS 8-digit line where the facts allow, dropping to a confident 6-digit where they don't. It's a strong first read — but indicative only. It can be wrong where duty-determinative facts (composition %, principal function, retail-set contents) are missing, which is exactly when it lowers its confidence and tells you precisely what it needs to firm the code up.

No. This tool is not legal advice, not an expert-signed opinion, and not a customs ruling. Binding classification certainty in India is available only through a CAAR advance ruling, which is valid for five years (extendable). Where a product sits in a genuine grey area, the tool is designed to say so and point you to the CAAR route.

The more duty-determinative detail, the tighter the code: material and composition percentages, the product's principal function, how it's sold (retail set or bulk), power source, and target user. For textiles, knit-vs-woven and fibre split matter; for footwear, upper and sole material; for supplements, whether therapeutic claims are made. A product image and a product page URL (as reference text) help too.

The free tool is India-first. The enterprise service extends the same monitoring loop to any lane you trade on — US, EU, UK, GCC and more — adding each destination or source country's official tariff sources to the sweep, while India remains the default depth and country packs activate on need.

Regulatory changes — CBIC notifications, Budget measures, GST rate moves, FTA entry-into-force and staging cuts, anti-dumping duties, QCOs — are matched to your SKUs, the duty is recomputed with the working shown, and you get an alert within a 48-hour SLA from publication. Every alert is version-stamped against a knowledge snapshot so it holds up in an audit months later.

No. The free tool processes your input to generate the single result on screen and does not retain product inputs beyond the request. We log only anonymised counts (for rate-limiting and to know the tool is being used) — never your product descriptions or images. Enterprise SKU registers are handled separately under client confidentiality.
